Behind the curtainBehind the curtain | Nico Handley holds the curtain for Kiara Rice as she looks to the stage before a dress rehearsal begins at the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Center at Rainer Beach High School. The production was led by Broadway Bound, a childrens theater group based in Seattle's more affluent north end. Broadway Bound had six weeks to prepare two-dozen high-school students, many of whom have never acted or sung on stage, to put on a high-quality, full version of Dreamgirls.

Sellers said he used to work as a construction worker, but that after 15 years, his body can't take it anymore and will become a stay-at-home Dad. Sellers also has three other children, two of whom are deaf twin girls.

KAYNE_FEATURES_0010KAYNE_FEATURES_0010 | Steven and Miriama Talley comfort their dog Starr, an American Pit Bull, while she gets an intravenous drip at The Donley Clinic at the Union Gospel Mission, Sept. 8, 2007. The clinic offers no-cost animal care to the homeless and low-income. The Talleys got Starr from a neighbor who allegedly abused the dog by not feeding her correctly and eventually asked the Talleys to take care of her. Starr, 14 months old, has not been vaccinated or spayed and came to the clinic dehydrated and with a high fever. Veterinarian Melinda Cumming suspected the Parvo virus. Starr fell ill two days ago. It was lucky for Starr as the clinic is only open the second and fourth Saturday of the month between 3 and 5 p.m. Otherwise, the Talleys would not have been able to treat Starr because of the cost. Starr helps Miriama with her anxiety, depression and agoraphobia. "She helps me to feel safe and secure because I know if anyone tried to hurt me, she would be right there for me," she said. Without the services of the clinic, Miriama said, "Starr would have died and who knows where that would have left me. I might have been dead, too," she said. "I thank God for these people."
